BW Group orders 8 tankers

Through its subsidiary, BW Pacific, BW Group has placed an order for up to eight long-range tankers. The company’s fleet includes 34 tankers, with LR1 newbuildings scheduled for delivery in 2017.

Carrier and tanker collide

The Huayang Endeavour bulk carrier and the Seafrontier oil tanker collided in the Dover Strait in the early morning hours. The tanker was loaded with gasoline and had 27 people on board, while the carrier had 22 people on board. Both vessels were damaged, but there were no injuries or water ingress reported and no pollution.

A tanker sank in Yemen

A rescue operation was launched after the tanker sank on June 26th. The ship originates from Panama and is believed to have been carrying crude oil. The 99-meter-long ship had 14 crew members, 12 of whom are recovering. Despite weather conditions and an oil spill, commercial vessels were unable to use lifeboats.

Traffic stopped in the Bosphorus due to engine problems

On June 5, traffic in the Bosphorus was halted after a malfunction occurred on the engine of a carrier from Malta. The 1986 vessel suffered a sudden breakdown at noon. The lifeboat and tug were sent to help the 79-meter vessel and traffic resumed after the engine failure was rectified.

A crew member went missing after the tugboat sank

Three crew members were rescued after a tugboat sank in the Gulf of Mexico, but one person was not found. The vessel sank approximately 30 nautical miles from Marsh Island. The Coast Guard sent 2 planes and 3 helicopters to explore the area. Several vessels joined the operation.

Palmetto State is returning from tests

In 2013 and 2014, NASSCO signed a contract with two companies, APT and SEA-Vista LLC. These two companies designed 8 LNG tankers. The Palmetto State was the last ship to be delivered in June. Palmetto State and other ships are one of the higher quality tankers and with ECO design have 33% higher fuel combustion efficiency.

Polaris Shipping Co. ordered 3 carriers

Polaris Shipping Co. has ordered 3 heavy carriers. The 325,000-ton iron ore carriers will replace aged ships, especially following the recent sinking of the VLOC-Stellar Daisy. Further details of the deal were not revealed and the company could not be reached for comment. Polaris Shipping is currently operating with a fleet of 31 bulk carriers.

Corpus welcomes (VLCC) Anne

The Corpus port has welcomed the very large crude carrier (VLCC) Anne. It is the largest oil tanker ever to call at a Gulf of Mexico port. The 1,093-foot-long ship is capable of holding more than 2 million barrels of oil. The arrival of the VLCC may reflect the port’s commitment to becoming a major exporter in the Permian Basin.
